Whether you’re looking to learn, connect, escape, or get inspired, picking up a book is always a good idea. Here are a few of the VIBE Agency favorites as the Summer just kicked started…

1000 Places to See Before You Die – Patricia Schultz This fantastic window to the world is just what we all need right now. There are intimate looks into far-off places, unique cultures, delectable food, and that freeing spirit of exploration. Maybe you’ve had vacation plans that were cancelled recently, or perhaps you want to make new plans to have something to look forward to as travel restrictions are lifted and people begin moving about the globe once more. Even if you’re neither of these things, 1000 Places is an excellent reminder of the tremendous creative capacity of humanity and our ability to inspire one another.

Hotel Pastis – Peter Mayle Adapted into a feature film starring Russell Crowe and Marion Coutillard several years ago, the memoir-esque styling of Hotel Pastis is a celebration of what happens when we take “the road less taken.” As the main-character, Simon, moves from a fast-paced, non-stop, highstress streets of London to the rolling hills and delightfully unscheduled pace of the French countryside, he learns that the things worth working for most in life may actually be quite far removed from the career world by which he has often measured his success.

The Seamstress – Frances de Pontes Peebles Cinematic in its descriptiveness and gripping in terms of storyline, this award-winning novel is a step back in time to the tales of two sisters whose lives and attitudes could not be more different. One – determined for stature, wealth, and comfort. The other – driven to make her story count on her own terms, no matter what the cost. At the center, however, the undeniable bonds between the two end up shaping their fates more than the other could ever imagine.

This is Not My Beautiful Life – Victoria Fedden And you thought life was tough for you right now. This inspired-by-true-life account begins when federal agents burst into the opulent South Florida home of Victoria’s parents. Never mind that she was simply a house guest at the time, while never-ending renovations of her own home were underway. Accusations of drug dealing, money laundering, and a bizarre cast of truth-is-stranger-than-fiction characters cast Victoria in a situation that no one could have possibly been prepared for… especially when 9 months pregnant. For anyone struggling with the unexpected and life taking a sharp left turn from what they had planned, Victoria’s honest account of how she found her own “new normal” and the strength to be resilient in the face of what seemed like certain doom is one of hope and inspiration.

Upstream – Dan Heath The latest groundbreaker from half of the acclaimed duo behind numerous Wall Street Journal and New York Times best-sellers could not have come at a better time. In business, we all tend to fall into the trap of wanting things to “just run smoothly.” We get so caught up in that pursuit that we train ourselves (and others) to put out fires, avoid risk, and shut-down challenges. Unfortunately, as we do so, we often take our eyes off the horizon to what lies ahead. It means we miss opportunities, fail to plan for the unexpected, or fall behind competitors who innovated when we stood still. Upstream not only uncovers the roots behind these behaviors, but also provides real-world examples, tips, and ideas for changing your own business mindset to be more forward-thinking.
